Despite some erratic weather patterns the fishing has been outstanding both shallow and deep in the Naples and Marco Island Region. Choosing to fish the inshore or offshore waters has been difficult as the bite is firing with many species available during the month of May.

The offshore grounds are still producing opportunities of king mackerel. While the big schools have already migrated to the northern Gulf waters, there are still good numbers remaining in our local waters. Free-lining live threadfin herring or slow trolling palm-sized blue runners on light tackle has been the top producing method.

Bottom fishing remains solid here in the region with full-day trips yielding the best results. Prospecting the natural hard-bottom areas in the 12-25-mile range with a variety of live/dead baits and metal jigs has red grouper, mangrove/lane snapper and porgies coming over the rail of the Grand Slam.

The inshore bite has been good with successfully procuring live bait being the caveat. The middle bays, passes and beaches are starting to show the "magic" with snook and redfish being my targeted species. Current swept points, rock jetties and deeper mangrove shorelines have been the scene of some great catching,
